“Sometimes, apheresis doesn’t go according to plan.
The AIM system suddenly failed right from the beginning, even though it had been working perfectly just a day before.
At that point, you can’t depend entirely on automation, you have to rely on your own technical skills, judgement and precision.
This was an allogeneic, fully HLA-matched stem cell collection from a donor mobilized with G-CSF and plerixafor, with an adequate pre-harvest CD34 count for AML case .
Automation makes our work easier and more efficient, but when technology fails, we have to be ready to switch to manual operation, even if it takes more time and demands greater attention at every step.
A good reminder that the machine is a tool; skill, judgement and precision drive the procedure.”
