“Aspirin: essential pharmacy facts you must know!
- Most used antiplatelet, but high bleeding risk
- Key pharmacology point
- Class: NSAID and Antiplatelet
- Mechanism:
- Irreversible COX-1 inhibition leads to decreased Thromboxane A₂ leads to decreased platelet aggregation
- Also increased prostaglandins lead to pain and fever relief
Indications
- Cardioprotection (low dose)
- Acute coronary syndrome (chewed dose)
- Pain relief
- Fever
- Inflammatory conditions
Forms and use
- Tablets (immediate / enteric-coated)
- Dispersible tablets
- Low-dose (75–150 mg) for antiplatelet use
Avoid/ caution
- Children with viral infections (Reye’s syndrome)
- Peptic ulcer / GI bleed history
- Elderly (high bleeding risk)
- NSAID-sensitive asthma
Dangerous combos
- Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin): increases the risk of bleeding
- Other NSAIDs lead to increased GI toxicity
- Steroids lead to increased ulcer risk
