“Aspirin: essential pharmacy facts you must know!

  • Most used antiplatelet, but high bleeding risk
  • Key pharmacology point
  1. Class: NSAID and Antiplatelet
  2. Mechanism:
  • Irreversible COX-1 inhibition leads to decreased Thromboxane A₂ leads to decreased platelet aggregation
  • Also increased prostaglandins lead to pain and fever relief

Indications

  •  Cardioprotection (low dose)
  •  Acute coronary syndrome (chewed dose)
  •  Pain relief
  •  Fever
  •  Inflammatory conditions

Forms and use

  • Tablets (immediate / enteric-coated)
  • Dispersible tablets
  • Low-dose (75–150 mg) for antiplatelet use

Avoid/ caution

  •  Children with viral infections (Reye’s syndrome)
  •  Peptic ulcer / GI bleed history
  •  Elderly (high bleeding risk)
  •  NSAID-sensitive asthma

Dangerous combos

  • Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin): increases the risk of bleeding
  • Other NSAIDs lead to increased GI toxicity
  • Steroids lead to increased ulcer risk
