Yves Bikorimana: When Cancer Triggers Blood Clotting – Understanding Trousseau Syndrome
Yves Bikorimana, CEO at MedData – Rwanda and Lab Scientist at The University Teaching Hospital of Kigali – Chuk, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“When Cancer Triggers Blood Clotting: Understanding Trousseau Syndrome
Cancer – associated thrombosis is a critical yet sometimes under-recognized cause of thromboembolic events.
One classic example is Trousseau syndrome, a paraneoplastic condition first described by Armand Trousseau, in which cancer creates a hypercoagulable (pro-clotting) state.
How does this happen?
Malignancies can activate the coagulation system through several biological mechanisms:
- Tumor cells release tissue factor and procoagulant microparticles
- Mucin – producing tumors interact with platelets and selectins
- Systemic inflammation increases thrombin generation
Clinical consequences may include:
- Migratory thrombophlebitis
- Recurrent venous thromboembolism
- Arterial thrombosis and unexplained (cryptogenic) stroke
This condition is most commonly associated with cancers such as pancreatic, gastric, and lung malignancies.
Key takeaway for clinicians:
- Unexplained or recurrent thrombosis – especially in unusual locations – should raise suspicion of an underlying (occult) malignancy.
- Understanding cancer-associated hypercoagulability is essential for early diagnosis, accurate risk assessment, and improved patient management.”
