Jackie Kunzler: Accelerating Innovation in Blood Processing
Jackie Kunzler, SVP, Global Head of R&D at Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”Healthcare regulations exist to keep patients safe.
That’s non-negotiable.
But sometimes, processes become overcomplicated. When that happens, new innovations can become delayed.
We recently experienced this with the Reveos Automated Blood Processing System in the U.S.
Blood centers around the world have used Reveos for more than a decade. It is the only system in the U.S. that automatically separates whole blood into red blood cells, plasma, and platelets in a single centrifugation cycle.
Although the system was cleared by the FDA in 2023, U.S. blood centers have often had to submit additional in-house data and wait 12 months or longer before they could receive approval for the system and realize the benefits.
As an R&D leader, it’s a reminder that innovation is only part of the challenge. Scientists and engineers spend years solving complex technical problems. But their work only creates value when the people who need it can benefit from it.
Recently, after reviewing available data and understanding the impact of getting this technology into the hands of blood centers faster, the FDA ruled that future Reveos approvals may now take as little as 30 days.
The technology didn’t change. The need didn’t change. Only the path to adoption. Innovation only fulfills its promise when it reaches the people it’s designed to help.
