Abdul Mannan: Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis Is Often Overlooked in Medical Inpatients
Abdul Mannan, Consultant Haematologist at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, posted on LinkedIn:
”Venous thromboembolism remains a leading cause of preventable hospital deaths, yet prophylaxis is often overlooked in medical inpatients. Evidence shows that systematic risk assessment using tools like the Padua Score, combined with bleeding-risk stratification (IMPROVE), saves lives. Pharmacological prophylaxis with LMWH reduces VTE by up to 50% in at-risk patients, whilst mechanical methods offer alternatives when bleeding risk is high. As clinicians, we must embed VTE assessment into daily practice—document decisions, reassess regularly, and champion mechanical prophylaxis when pharmacological options are contraindicated. Let’s ensure every patient receives the right prophylaxis at the right time. Prevention is always better than treatment.”
