David McIntosh Calls for Global Action During International Plasma Awareness Week 2025
David McIntosh, Founder and Chair of United Plasma Action, posted on LinkedIn:
” International Plasma Awareness Week 2025 – the first such week of the second Quarter of the 21st Century – is a golden opportunity to pause for serious reflection and to begin to chart a new way forward for the Plasma Community, globally.
The PPTA are leading the way in terms of recognition of past and present successes. Millions of patients rely on PPTA member companies for the vital plasma-derived medicines they need, for their quality of life, and often for Life itself. The combined efforts of PPTA members and the other talented hard-working enterprises that make up the International Plasma Community are, today, supporting and saving lives totalling some 20% of the total global need.
On the other hand, the United Plasma Action (UPA) team hopes to draw attention to the 80% of patients globally who are currently receiving little or no plasma-derived treatment at all. While quite rightly celebrating past and current successes – and, particularly, celebrating and thanking current plasma donors – let us all also give humble thought to the abject failure of our current global system overall, and commit ourselves to serving patients better from now on.
Let us, please, direct ourselves to the questions –
- “How can we do better – MUCH BETTER – in the months and years ahead?”
- “How can we begin to meet the clinical requirements of the millions of patients in Low and Middle Income Countries who suffer and die without the plasma-derived treatment they so badly need?”
- “How can we best form positive patient-centred alliances with LMIC Governments, International Authorities and others to move forward most effectively – and at pace?'”
Quoting PPTA Europe‘s post
“We are happy to announce that International Plasma Awareness Week (IPAW) will take place globally from October 6-10. The week encourages communities worldwide to recognize the vital role of plasma in creating lifesaving medicines and honors those who donate. This year’s initiative will debut a new global theme: “Plasma Powers Possibility,” which shines a light on plasma medicine’s life-enabling impact and creates opportunities and community for generous donors.”
