A brilliant explanation of phenotype vs genotype using a LEGO house. If you know, you know… it’s all about the bricks!
From when to genotype positive DAT, multiply transfused patients, limited phenotyping reagents through PCR, SSP, real time PCR and different approaches to detecting those amplicons.
Some great reminders too: context is everything. Who are we testing, why are we testing them, and ultimately what blood do we need to provide? Raw genotype data can be information overload; turning it into a clinically meaningful result is where the real value lies.
And where are we heading? More genotyping, better technology, increasing accuracy and increasingly sophisticated donor – patient matching. Great to see Haem-Match featuring in that future too!
Red cell genotyping is definitely here to stay… and I’m here for it.”
