“Transfusion Medicine in India: How Far We Have Come, and How Far We Must Go
Over the past two decades, transfusion medicine in India has undergone a remarkable transformation.
From component therapy to the expansion of apheresis services, molecular immunohematology, patient blood management initiatives, hemovigilance programs, cellular therapies, and increasing automation in blood centres – our specialty has evolved significantly.
Today, many centers in India are delivering services that match global standards, supported by dedicated professionals, technological advancements, and a growing culture of quality and patient safety.
Yet, while we celebrate these achievements, we must also recognize that the journey is far from complete.
There remains a need to:
- Improve equitable access to advanced transfusion services across all regions.
- Strengthen voluntary blood donation and donor retention.
- Expand molecular typing and rare donor registries.
- Enhance transfusion safety through hemovigilance and data-driven practices.
- Integrate patient blood management more widely.
- Build capacity in cellular therapies and advanced apheresis.
The future of transfusion medicine in India lies not only in adopting new technologies but in ensuring that these advances reach every patient who needs them.
We have every reason to be proud of how far we have come.
Equally, we have every reason to remain ambitious about what still lies ahead.
The best chapters of Indian transfusion medicine are yet to be written.
What do you think will be the next major milestone for transfusion medicine in India?”
