William Aird: Why Is LDH Elevated In Splenic Infarction?
William Aird, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, shared a post on X about recent article by Ori Wand et al, published in Annals of Medicine, adding:
” Why Is LDH Elevated In Splenic Infarction?
I saw 2 cases of splenic infarction last week.
Both had elevated LDH.
Turns out that’s common: in one series, LDH was elevated in 72 percent of patients tested.
Why?
Probably for the same reason LDH rises with infarction elsewhere:
Ischemia leads to cell injury, followed by necrosis and the release of intracellular LDH.
Not because the spleen is packed with RBCs.
