Abel Sandmann։ How Common Are Cerebral Cavernous Malformations, Actually?
Abel Sandmann, Arts-assistent at Neurologie Noordwest, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry:
”How common are cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM), actually?
New data on CCM incidence now published in Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry!
The true incidence of CCM has long been unclear. The only four previous studies
- predate widespread availability of MRI,
- had a short study period, or
- were retrospective and hospital-based.
Incidence of cerebral cavernous malformations among adults in Scotland: a prospective, population-based study addresses this gap.
Our results:
- The incidence of CCM was 0.72 per 100,000 individuals per year
- The rate was stable over a 10-year period
- There was no difference between the sexes
- Symptomatic incidence exceeded that of incidentally detected CCM
- Among people with asymptomatic CCM, 1 in 400 will become symptomatic annually
These findings have implications for healthcare service planning and power calculations in future research studies, which will likely require international, multicentre involvement.”
