Abhishek Jain on Next Generation Experimental Models of Venous Physiology and Pathology
Abhishek Jain, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Medical Physiology and Cardiovascular Sciences at Texas AandM University Department of Biomedical Engineering, shared on LinkedIn:
”Blood vessels are distinct. The drugs physicians use to treat the conditions of the arteries are very different from the ones that treat veins.
Why is it so?
And do we have sufficient experimental models to gain the differential knowledge of the distinct vasculature, their pathophysiology, mechanics, function and treatments?
Few years ago, along with my first PhD student Navaneeth Krishna Rajeeva Pandian, and collaboration with John Cooke, we engineered a vein-chip that presented a toolbox to specifically look into modeling some critical aspects of venous thrombosis.
But now, after publishing original works, with my current PhD student, Sreelakshmy Suresh at Texas AandM University Department of Biomedical Engineering and Texas AandM University College of Engineering, along with our collaborators Colin E Evans and Mark Hoofnagle, and co-author Rana Dhar, we examine the state-of-the-art in modeling venous circulation with microphysiological systems, and provide insight into what can we look forward to in immediate and late future.
I think venous modeling platforms must grow, and they should advance fast
