Abhishek Jain: Vessel-on-a-Chip – Exploring Viral-Induced Endothelial Dysfunction
Abhishek Jain, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Medical Physiology and Cardiovascular Sciences at Texas A and M University College of Engineering, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, adding:
“Our work is on the cover of this month’s first issue of Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH)
First authored by my grad student Sreelakshmy Suresh at Texas A and M University Department of Biomedical Engineering, the cover describes her work on demonstrating an ‘Endothelialized vessel-chip platform for modeling SARS-CoV-2 infection–induced endothelial dysfunction’ with support from our UG scholar mentee Rebecca John and in collaboration with Dr. John Connor and Dr. John Cooke.
Also, the publication is promoted via an excellent commentary by Dr. Susan Shea and Dr. Kimberly Thomas, titled, ‘Going with the flow: a new current in viral infection–induced thrombosis’.
I loved their concluding para that states:
‘The Tide is Turning
Suresh et al. demonstrate that shear stress reshapes arterial endothelial responses to viral and inflammatory injury, highlighting the value of vessel-on-a-chip and organ-on-a-chip systems for mechanistic investigation.
The next generation of models should build upon this foundation by incorporating the cellular, extracellular, and hematologic complexity of the vascular niche.
As these model systems continue to evolve, they hold promise not only for better understanding viral-induced endotheliopathy but also for broader applications across thromboinflammatory disease, precision medicine, and therapeutic discovery.’ ”
