Ali Ahmadi: The Immune Landscape After Ischemic Stroke and How to Advance Toward Effective Therapeutic Strategies
Ali Ahmadi, Researcher at Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Circulation Research, adding:
”Ischaemic stroke is not merely a disturbance of cerebral arterial circulation that leads to irreversible neuronal loss.
Behind the acute and chronic pathophysiology of stroke and its life-threatening or long-term sequelae lies a series of immunological changes mediated by platelets, resident microglia and infiltrating leukocytes, which modulate inflammation in a complex and time-dependent manner.
Despite decades of preclinical and clinical research into leveraging immunomodulatory mechanisms to improve recovery from ischaemic stroke, the field is still awaiting a breakthrough.
In our latest review article in Circulation Research, we have taken a comprehensive and critical look at the immune landscape after ischaemic stroke and how we can build on our knowledge to move towards effective therapeutic solutions for this deadly condition.
Honoured to have participated in writing the first article in my PhD journey with the help of great scientists Alex Peh, Ahmed Refaat, Marcel Michla, Jonathan Noonan, and Karlheinz Peter in the Atherothrombosis and Vascular Biology lab at Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, and the guidance of Guido Stoll.”
