Amber Paratore Sanchez: Therapeutic Plasma Exchange in PTE Patients with Cold Agglutinins

Amber Paratore Sanchez, Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of California, San Diego Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Pulmonary Circulation, adding:

“I’m pleased to share our recent publication in Pulmonary Circulation exploring the perioperative management of patients with cold agglutinins undergoing pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE) for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH).

In this retrospective study of 1,107 patients undergoing PTE at UC San Diego, we examined the challenges of managing cold agglutinins in patients requiring deep hypothermic circulatory arrest.

Among 15 patients who underwent preoperative therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE), there were no perioperative or postoperative episodes of agglutination or hemolysis.

These findings highlight the potential role of therapeutic plasma exchange as part of a multidisciplinary, individualized approach to managing this uncommon but important clinical challenge.

Congratulations to all my coauthors on this work!”
