Stefano Navarro: Hypertension Reprogrammes Megakaryocytes and Increases Platelet Responsiveness to Thrombin

Stefano Navarro, Postdoctoral Researcher at Rudolf Virchow Center of University of Würzburg, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Hypertension is usually discussed in terms of blood pressure, but what does its inflammatory environment do to platelets?

Based on the work of Wang et al., ehj, 2026, In our editorial in the European Heart Journal, Bernhard Nieswandt and I discuss new evidence that hypertension can reprogramme megakaryocytes, increasing PAR4 on newly formed platelets and making them more responsive to thrombin.

We also consider what this could mean for thrombotic risk and the potential relevance of the use of valsartan in hypertension.

It was a real pleasure to write this editorial.”
