Joanne Marlor: NHS Blood and Transplant Opens Country’s Largest Donor Centre in Reading

“One week ago today, I was in Reading for the official opening of our brand-new donor centre.
A bit of a walk down memory lane, as Reading is somewhere I used to live!
As the largest donor centre in the country, it will be the first to collect blood, platelets and plasma under one roof, helping to save and improve even more lives.
And wow, what an incredible space. From the bright, welcoming environment and beautiful branding to the thoughtful features designed to make the experience as accessible, comfortable and inclusive as possible, it’s clear just how much care has gone into creating this centre.
It was fantastic to finally see it in person after hearing so much about it. Just a short walk from the train station, it’s perfectly placed to serve what I know from experience is a diverse, generous and community-minded town.
One of the highlights of the day was hearing from the people whose lives are connected by donation.
From the BOSH! team officially opening the centre with their own connection to the cause, to powerful stories from a blood recipient’s wife, plasma recipients, and a donor who regularly gives plasma to help save lives, every speech was a reminder of why this work matters so much.
And of course, no NHSBT event would be complete without Billy and Pip, who always bring an extra sense of occasion!”
