Aurore Ughetto: The Hemocompatibility Burden of Micro-Axial Flow Pump Support

”One week after our first publication, I’m pleased to share our new publication from the IMPACT project in Critical Care:
‘Bleeding and thrombotic events during micro-axial flow pump support: a European multicenter cohort study’.

We now turn to a critical aspect of micro-axial flow pump support: hemocompatibility.

In a large European multicenter cohort (11 high-volume centers, >1000 patients), nearly 1 in 2 patients experienced a complication during support.

Key findings:

  • Bleeding (34%) and thrombosis (24%) remain frequent
  • Both are independently associated with worse 180-day outcomes
  • They follow distinct clinical profiles, supporting more individualized management strategies

These results highlight how challenging it remains to strike the right balance between preventing thrombosis and avoiding bleeding in cardiogenic shock supported with mAFP.

Above all, this work reflects a collective European effort.

Combining experience across centers, aligning data, and sharing practices is essential to better capture real-world complexity.
