Caitlin Raymond: Estimating Infection Rates After Therapeutic Plasma Exchange in a Large Real-World Population
Caitlin Raymond, Assistant Professor of Pathology and Transfusion Medicine at University of Wisconsin-Madison, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and Happy Xiong co-authored, published in Transfusion, adding:
“Our new paper is out in Transfusion, and congratulations to first author Happy Xiong.
We used TriNetX to look at infection after therapeutic plasma exchange in 22,993 patients across many indications and care settings.
Major findings:
- Serious infection within 30 days: 6.3%
- Opportunistic fungal infection: about 1%
- No clustering of infections around the procedure
This is a descriptive study without a comparator, so it can’t say whether TPE itself raises infection risk. It does give a large-scale estimate for a question the literature has only answered in small cohorts.”
