Daniel Victor Ortigoza: Stroke and Bleeding Risk in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Cancer
Daniel Victor Ortigoza, Vice Chair of the Argentine Federation of Cardiology’s Cardio-Oncology Committee, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Malak El-Rayes et al, published in JACC: CardioOncology, adding:
“In a retrospective, observational cohort study of patients over 65 years of age with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation, patients with (n:21901) and without cancer (n:21901)were compared.
The CHA2Ds2-VASc score was used, and for bleeding risk: ATRIA
Cancer did not significantly increase the risk of stroke in patients with AF (HR: 1.01; 95% CI 0.88-1.15)
Regarding bleeding: (HR: 1.45; 95% CI 1.37-1.53)
Therefore, cancer patients had a 45% higher risk of bleeding and a similar risk of stroke after starting anticoagulation therapy.
There were more strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation and lung cancer, and more bleeding in patients with hematologic cancers, kidney cancer, and bladder cancer.”
