Dirk Sibbing: Potent P2Y12 Inhibition in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Acute Coronary Syndrome
Dirk Sibbing, Cardiologist and Angiologist at Lauterbacher Mill Private Clinic and LMU Munich, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Nature Medicine, adding:
“EPIDAURUS Trial – presented at ESC 2026 and published simultaneously in nature medicine
DOAC plus potent P2Y12 inhibition vs. DOAC plus clopidogrel and in-hospital aspirin in ACS patients (n=602) with atrial fibrillation undergoing PCI
Treatment with a potent P2Y12 inhibitor was associated with higher bleeding rates without a clear reduction in the risk of ischemic complications
Key take: More potent platelet inhibition does not necessarily result in less ischemic events
Clinical scenarios differ in terms of assets and drawbacks of potent platelet inhibition with prasugrel or ticagrelor
Congratulations to Prof. Dr. med. Konstantinos Rizas and Prof. Dr. med. Steffen Massberg at Cardio LMU for the trial lead and for bringing together so many cardiologists for this multi-centre RCT
Please see our results published in Nature Medicine”
