Hamish Aitken-Buck: New Insights Challenge the Role of Histidine Rich Glycoprotein in Thrombosis
Hamish Aitken-Buck, Clinical Research Strategist at Thrombosis Research Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:
“Really pleased to see our latest study now available on medRxiv, the result of a great collaboration between the Thrombosis Research Institute, London and colleagues at Duke and McMaster.
Using data from more than 50,000 participants in the UK Biobank Pharma Proteomics Project, we applied a two-sample Mendelian randomisation approach to investigate whether genetically predicted levels of histidine-rich glycoprotein (HRG) are causally associated with thrombosis risk. Somewhat surprisingly, we found no evidence of an association with either arterial or venous thrombosis.
As often happens in research, the findings raise as many questions as they answer.
- How does the rs9898 variant affect HRG function?
- Why does its relationship with HRG protein levels differ across proteomic platforms?
- And if HRG influences coagulation and thrombogenesis in experimental models, why doesn’t this appear to translate into clinical thrombotic outcomes?
Plenty of new questions to explore.
Many thanks to all the collaborators who made this work possible.”
