Violeta Jardin: The Evolution of Viscoelastic Testing
Violeta Jardin, General Manager at Haemoview Diagnostics, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Jan Wienhold et al, published in JTH, adding:
“Seventy eight years ago, a cup, a pin and a moving line changed the way we could look at clotting.
Hartert’s thrombelastograph showed clot formation, strength and breakdown unfolding in whole blood.
A remarkable idea but one broad tracing could show that something was wrong without clearly explaining why.
The real evolution of viscoelastic testing has been about learning to ask better questions.
This historical review specifically recognises Andreas Calatzis APIRO Diagnostics Kft. and colleagues for a pivotal step in that evolution: the development of ROTEG, later ROTEM; defined activators, inhibitors and paired tests helped turn a global tracing into more focused assessments.
At Haemoview Diagnostics, we have had the privilege of seeing Andreas’s contribution continue through ROTEM, ClotPro and now MultiClot, alongside a wider scientific and clinical team.
That evolution has practical and personal value.
The TPA assay actively challenges the clot with tPA, rather than waiting for spontaneous breakdown to appear.
The RVV assay and ECA assay help assess the functional effects of factor Xa and direct thrombin inhibitors.
These are not simply extra tests on a menu.
They are different ways of exploring what may sit behind an abnormal curve.
They are designed to complement not replace clinical judgement and targeted laboratory testing.
For me, that is why this history is worth sharing: a proven principle, refined over decades, helping clinicians ask more focused questions about the patient in front of them.”
