Maria Abbattista: From Combined Hormonal Contraceptives to Cerebral Vein Thrombosis
Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH) shared on LinkedIn:
”The risk of cerebral vein thrombosis associated with different types of combined hormonal contraceptives: a case-control study
In this case-control study of 206 women with CVT and 868 controls, combined hormonal contraceptive (CHC) use was associated with a 10-fold higher risk of CVT.
Risk increased with higher estrogen doses and was particularly elevated with fourth-generation pills (OR 28.3).
Progestin-only and variable-dose CHCs carried a 6-fold increased risk.
Importantly, thrombophilia and positive family history had synergistic effects, with odds ratios exceeding 200 in some subgroups.”
