John Michael Quinn: Prehospital Whole Blood Remains Critical in Trauma Care

John Michael Quinn, Faculty Lecturer at College of Remote and Offshore Medicine Foundation, Emergency Medicine Physician at Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Jason E. Smith et al. published in NEJM:

“Interesting paper and definitely worth a read.

At face value, it suggests that prehospital whole blood was not superior to component therapy in this trial setting.

But I would be careful not to overinterpret that as meaning whole blood has no value, or that the broader concept should be discarded.

As always, an important study can still leave important questions unanswered.

On scene time and coagulopathy indicators are interesting here.

I would not throw the baby out with the bathwater.”
