Joseph Pierre Aboumsallem: ET Treatment Enters a New Chapter
Joseph Pierre Aboumsallem, Drug Development Lead – siRNA Therapeutics, Postdoctoral Researcher, Project Manager at Erasmus MC, Project Manager at University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Isabelle Plo and William Vainchenker, published in NEJM, adding:
“Amazing news!!
The FDA has approved ropeginterferon alfa-2b for essential thrombocythemia (ET), the first new treatment approval for the disease in nearly 30 years.
ET is a chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm driven by clonal haematopoiesis.
Persistent thrombocytosis increases the risk of thrombosis and bleeding, and treatment options remain limited for patients who do not respond to or cannot tolerate hydroxyurea.
In SURPASS-ET, 37.4% of patients treated with ropeginterferon achieved a durable composite response, including blood count control, no progression of splenomegaly, and no thrombotic or haemorrhagic events, sustained at 9 and 12 months. The corresponding rate with anagrelide was 3.6%.
The molecular responses across JAK2, CALR and MPL are also important. Controlling platelet counts is one part of treatment.
Reducing the burden of the underlying clone is a different proposition and has been a long-standing goal in MPN research.
It is good to see interferon biology, developed over decades, now translating into a new treatment option for patients with ET.”
