Kaihang Wang: Portal Vein Thrombosis After Pediatric Liver Transplantation

Kaihang Wang, Medical Student at University of Zurich, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Transplantation, adding:

“I am excited to share that my first paper has been published in Transplantation.

Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) remains a serious complication after pediatric liver transplantation using technical variant grafts, often threatening both graft and patient survival. In this international multicenter collaboration across 19 centers, we analyzed the risks in 3,137 pediatric recipients:

PVT was associated with a 2.8-fold increase in patient mortality and a nearly 10-fold increase in the risk of graft loss.

Lower recipient body weight and an underlying diagnosis of biliary atresia emerged as the strongest independent predictors driving PVT, highlighting the need for early detection.
