Petros Kountouris: Geostatistical Modelling Maps Global β-Thalassaemia Carrier Prevalence
Petros Kountouris, Scientist and Assistant Professor at The Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, shared Mikaella Kontopoulou‘s post on LinkedIn:
“Excited to share that the amazing Mikaella Kontopoulou, a PhD student I co-supervise with Coralea Stephanou and Chigozie Edson Utazi, is presenting her work on geostatistical modeling of beta-thalassemia carrier prevalence across 25 countries at Academy For Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia 2026 in London.
See the details of the talk and the published preprint of this work in Mikaella’s post below.”
Mikaella Kontopoulou, PhD in Medical Genetics at The Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Mikaella Kontopoulou et al, published in medRxiv, adding:
“The countries with the highest β-thalassaemia carrier prevalence do not necessarily have the largest carrier populations.
That distinction is central to the work I’ll be presenting at ASCAT2026 this Friday in London.
Using ITHANET data and Bayesian geostatistical modelling across 25 countries, carrier prevalence was mapped at high spatial resolution, carrier populations were estimated, and priority locations for additional surveys were identified.
The aim is to move from fragmented epidemiological evidence towards a more actionable framework for screening, genetic counselling, prevention planning and future data collection.”
