Rytis Masiliūnas: Atrial Fibrillation and Stroke Care Disparities Across the Baltic Region
Rytis Masiliūnas, Neurologist at Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Klinikos, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Acta Neurologica Scandinavica, adding:
”I’m pleased to share our original article, just published in Acta Neurologica Scandinavica, and developed in collaboration with colleagues from 23 of 26 stroke centers across Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
We conducted a cross-country analysis of 897 ischemic stroke cases, prospectively recorded in the RES-Q registry during Q1 of 2022.
Our findings reveal notable regional differences in stroke care:
- The prevalence of stroke patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) was among the highest reported in literature, ranging from 36.2% in Lithuania to 43.0% in Estonia.
- Anticoagulant use at stroke onset among patients with known AF varied significantly: from 72.7% in Estonia to only 34.9% in Latvia.
- Latvia had significantly lower recanalization rates (IVT 21.1%, EVT 5.1%) and limited inpatient rehabilitation access (2.7% vs. 30.5% in Lithuania and 20.2% in Estonia)
- This comprehensive multicenter comparison of stroke care in the Baltic states highlights a high burden of AF and important disparities in recanalization therapy and post-stroke rehabilitation pathways.
