Stephan Munich: How Has Stroke Care Evolved in The US?

Stephan Munich, Associate Professor at Rush University Medical Center, shared on LinkedIn:

”How has stroke care evolved in the US?

An analysis of over 1 million stroke admissions helps to shed some light:

  • The rate of mechanical thrombectomy (MT) is increasing, though expanded MT eligibility trials have had little impact
  • The rate of decompressive hemicraniectomy is decreasing
  • Mechanical thrombectomy is being expanded to older and sicker patients
  • Care is expanding with intervention more frequently being performed at small, medium, and rural hospitals
  • Although urban, teaching hospitals are treating sicker patients with more comorbidities, mortality rate is decreased and rate of disposition to home is higher
