Suvro Sankha Datta: Reducing Unnecessary Blood Ordering in Oncologic Surgery
Suvro Sankha Datta, Senior Consultant and Head Transfusion Medicine at Tata Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Indian Journal of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, adding:
”Even fifty years after Friedman’s seminal paper on the blood utilization model, appropriateness in preoperative blood transfusion requests for oncosurgery remains far from being achieved and still represents a significant unmet need, resulting in blood ordering patterns that are often institution- and/or surgeon-specific.
The practice of liberal transfusion is particularly prevalent in institutions that do not adhere to patient blood management protocols.
In this retrospective audit we analyze blood utilization data of 6,051 patients with solid tumours who underwent elective surgeries over four years.”
