Could Daily Zinc Be a Game-Changer for Children With Sickle Cell Anemia? – TIF

“New research worth following in sickle cell anaemia
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinicaltrial led by the Indiana University School of Medicine, in collaboration with research and clinical partners in Uganda, has reported a striking reduction in infections among young children with sickle cell anaemia.
The study followed 100 children aged 1–5 years in Uganda for six months.
Those who received 20 mg of zinc daily experienced a 38% lower incidence of all-cause infections, including respiratory, gastrointestinal, and bacterial infections, compared with those who received a placebo.
All participants also initiated or continued treatment with hydroxyurea.
The findings, published online in JAMA, point to a potentially affordable and accessible approach that merits further investigation, particularly in settings where infections remain a major cause of illness and mortality among children with sickle cell anaemia.
However, the researchers emphasise that these results come from a small, single-site trial and must be confirmed through larger, multisite studies, including studies involving older children.”
