Luca Saba on Metabolic Axis of Vulnerability: Insights From MR Vessel Wall Imaging
Luca Saba, Dean of School of Medicine at the University of Cagliari, shared a post on LinekedIn:
“I am pleased to share my latest editorial published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, entitled “Metabolic Axis of Vulnerability: Lessons From MR Vessel Wall Imaging.”
The editorial discusses the important work by Shao S et al., “Metabolically abnormal obesity and carotid plaque vulnerability: a vessel wall MRI study linking obesity phenotypes to atherosclerotic instability,”.
The study provides compelling evidence that metabolically abnormal obesity is associated with a significantly higher prevalence of high-risk carotid plaques and intraplaque hemorrhage compared with other phenotypes. These findings highlight that metabolic dysfunction, rather than body mass index alone, is the decisive factor tipping plaques from quiescent to dangerous.
The implications for vascular medicine are clear: risk stratification must move beyond simple anthropometrics to include detailed metabolic profiling, while intraplaque hemorrhage stands out as a particularly robust imaging biomarker of instability. By integrating these insights into clinical practice, we can better identify vulnerable patients and refine strategies for prevention and treatment.”
