Irma Bagdoniene: Lowering LDL May Alter Inflammatory and Oxidative Pathways

Irma Bagdoniene, Cardiologist and Lipidologist at Klinikum Lippe – University Hospital for Cardiology, Angiology, and Internal Intensive Care Medicine, posted on LinkedIn:

“Lowering lipids — but increasing oxidation?

A new study by Koutsogianni et al. (2025) looked at people with high Lp(a) and found something unexpected:
– Statins and ezetimibe raised oxidized phospholipids on apoB and apo(a), reduced those on plasminogen,
– while PCSK9 inhibitors had no clear effect.

So even when we lower LDL cholesterol, other inflammatory and oxidative processes may change in ways we don’t yet understand.

The message is clear: we need more studies to understand how lipid-lowering therapies truly affect the biology of Lp(a).”

Title: Effect of lipid-lowering medications on oxidized phospholipids in individuals with elevated LIPOPROTEIN(a)
