Muhammad Awidi – Choking Growth One Puff at a Time: How Tobacco is Strangling Jordan’s Economy
Muhammad Awidi, Hematology and Oncology Fellow at Roswell Park Cancer Center, posted on LinkedIn:
”Jordan’s tobacco crisis is not just a health crisis, it is a major economic threat. Tobacco use and its consequences already cost Jordan twice the Ministry of Health’s annual budget. By 2035, tobacco use is projected to cost Jordan over 16 billion JOD in healthcare and lost productivity.
In my recent policy commentary in the British Medical Journal – Tobacco Control, I propose and detail on how to establish a National Health Fund that ensures financial sustainability without adding to the public budget.
Its main goals are:
1. Offer free, nationwide smoking cessation programs.
2. Fund healthcare infrastructure expansion to meet the growing burden of tobacco-related diseases.
The question is no longer “Can we afford to act?” It’s “Can we afford not to?”
