Ron DePinho: A Transformative Insight into Lupus – and the Virus Nearly All of Us Carry
Ron DePinho, Professor and Past President of MD Anderson Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”A transformative insight into lupus—and a virus nearly all of us carry.
Science Translational Medicine reports that every single case of lupus is triggered by EBV, a virus that silently resides in about 95% of the global population.
If validated, this finding could fundamentally shift our understanding of autoimmunity and the origins of complex diseases like lupus. EBV, long associated with mononucleosis and certain cancers, may also be the hidden instigator behind one of the most enigmatic autoimmune conditions—one that disproportionately affects women and people of color.
- Could EBV biomarkers help us identify lupus earlier or more precisely?
- Would a future EBV vaccine reduce the incidence of lupus and perhaps other autoimmune diseases?
- Can we design targeted therapies that interrupt the EBV–autoimmunity axis?
As we uncover the viral roots of chronic disease, the lines between infectious disease, immunology, and chronic illness are beginning to blur. The implications for public health, biopharma R and D, and vaccine strategy are immense.
One virus. One breakthrough. A whole new way of thinking.”
