Clinical Trial Led by Professor Michael Reade Ensures Platelets Survive the Freezing and Thawing Process
Ganesh Mohan, Professor at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, reposted from The University of Queensland on LinkedIn:
“Promising signs and interesting days ahead as a transfusion medicine specialist”
Quoting The University of Queensland’s post:
“The shelf life of life-saving platelet transfusions for patients with significant bleeding has just been dramatically extended – from a week to 2 years.
UQ and Australian Red Cross Lifeblood research shows that freezing the platelets made them only slightly less effective and still stopped blood loss.
Obstetrics and gastrointestinal patients, as well as those injured in accidents or combat zones, are among those who need transfusions.
The limited shelf life currently means 25–33% of platelet units are discarded worldwide, and there are often no platelets available in rural and remote areas.
The results from a clinical trial led by Professor Michael Reade builds on a decade of research to ensure platelets could survive the freezing and thawing process.
Together, these findings will change the international management of blood supplies, saving lives around the world.
