Benjamin Vipler on D-dimer Cutoff Safely Ruling Out DVT
Benjamin Vipler, Associate Professor of Medicine at University of Colorado School of Medicine, shared on LinkedIn:
”An age-adjusted D-dimer cutoff may safely rule out DVT and increase diagnostic efficiency, reducing the need for unnecessary imaging.”
This multicenter prospective study evaluated whether an age-adjusted D-dimer cutoff can safely exclude deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in outpatients with suspected disease.
Among patients with low or unlikely clinical probability, using the age-adjusted cutoff increased the number of negative D-dimer results—especially in older patients—without missed venous thromboembolic events during 3-month follow-up.
These findings support the safety and clinical value of age-adjusted D-dimer thresholds to improve diagnostic efficiency in suspected DVT.
