“Silent Hemoglobin Variants: A Hidden Cause of Persistent Mild Anemia
Persistently low or borderline hemoglobin (often 9–11 g/dL) is not always nutritional anemia.
A significant proportion of individuals are heterozygous carriers of hemoglobin variants (Hb E, Hb D Punjab, Hb Lepore, β-thalassemia trait, sickle cell trait) and remain clinically asymptomatic.
These carriers:
- Have mild or no anemia
- Lead normal lives
- Are frequently misdiagnosed as iron deficiency and overtreated
The real risk emerges when two carriers marry, leading to severe hemoglobinopathies in offspring.
HPLC hemoglobin analysis is the preferred first-line screening tool for:
- Structural variants
- Quantitative disorders
- Premarital and antenatal screening
Key message:
Genetic screening and counseling prevent disease burden—horoscope matching does not.
Match hemoglobin before matching horoscopes.”
