Raul Santos: It’s Time Science Wins the War Against Bad Opinions and Lies on Statins
Raul Santos, Researcher at ARO, Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he co-authored with Timo Strandberg, adding:
”In this editorial, written by Timo Strandberg and me in the The Lancet, we comment on the most recent CTT meta-analysis on statin safety. Statins have changed how we practice preventive medicine: these drugs prevent myocardial infarction and stroke, reduce ischemia and the need for revascularization, and prolong life! Statins, as well as cholesterol reduction, are safe; this was clearly shown by the Oxford group’s robust patient-level meta-analysis.
Indeed, statins may raise glucose levels, and patients with prediabetes may pass the diagnosis threshold and develop diabetes; also, elevations in AST/ALT without clinical significance may occur. Finally, statins may cause tubular proteinuria (reduction in absorption) and mild edema; however, these are rare and of no clinical significance. It’s about time science wins the war against bad opinions and lies!՛՛
