Benjamin YQ Tan: Why Patient-Reported Outcomes Matter in Young Stroke Survivors Returning to Work

Benjamin YQ Tan, Stroke Neurologist and Brain Health Researcher at National University Hospital, shared on LinkedIn:

”Grateful to The Straits Times for highlighting an issue that does not always receive enough attention in stroke recovery — returning to work.

While modern acute stroke therapies such as thrombolysis and thrombectomy have dramatically improved survival and functional outcomes, recovery does not end with physical independence.

Traditional measures often focus on mobility.

But returning to work requires much more: cognition, emotional resilience, confidence, and the ability to navigate real-world environments.

For many younger stroke survivors, work represents identity, financial stability, and normalcy.

Supporting that transition is therefore not just part of rehabilitation, it is central to helping patients regain purpose and rebuild normalcy.

I am grateful to our multidisciplinary teams across National University Health System who are committed to improving long-term outcomes beyond survival.

Most importantly, we thank our patients who allow us to learn from their recovery journeys and continually remind us why this work matters.

Stroke recovery is not only about saving lives. It is about restoring lives.”
