A Major Milestone for Haemophilia Care in Kenya and the Region – Kenya Haemophilia Association

“A Major Milestone for Haemophilia Care in Kenya and the Region

On 24th February 2026, Kenya Haemophilia Association, together with the Novo Nordisk Haemophilia and Haemoglobinopathies Foundation, met the CEO of Kenyatta National Hospital, Richard Lesiyampe, to strengthen collaboration and review progress on establishing a Regional Training Centre (RTC) at KNH.

This center represents a transformative step not only for Kenya, but for East and Central Africa. It will build regional expertise, expand access to specialized care, and position KNH as a hub for training, research, and excellence in haemophilia and, in the future, sickle cell disease.

Highlights:

  1. Dr Lesiyampe reiterated the strong commitment of KNH leadership to support the establishment of the RTC.
  2. The RTC will provide a regional vision, serving East and Central Africa, with future inclusion of Sickle Cell Disease.
  3. Enhanced training for doctors and nurses at KNH.
  4. The development of the RTC will be accompanied by strengthened diagnostics, pharmacy, and physiotherapy services.
  5. KNH will become an improved center for comprehensive care for people with haemophilia and other blood disorders.
  6. The RTC will be supported by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) through a fellowship for Dr Catherine Muendo and a potential grant. The NNHF will support other infrastructural and training capacity needs to make the RTC a reality.

With over 425 haemophilia patients at KNH, this milestone will not only improve local care but also position KNH as a leading regional hub for training and excellence.

The RTC in Kenya will be co-hosted by KNH and the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and will be the third accredited center in Africa.

The future of specialized blood disorder care is taking shape, and we are proud to be part of this journey.
