Nirupama Yechoor: How Survivors of Stroke Define Spiritual Wellbeing in Recovery

Nirupama Yechoor, Physician, Assistant Professor of Neurology at Mass General Brigham, Telemedicine Specialist at Doctors Without Borders (MSF), shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, adding:

”I’m very excited to share our new publication that investigates how survivors of stroke define spiritual wellbeing in recovery.

As neurointensivists, we are often the physicians present at the end of our patients lives.

It’s a sobering privilege and one that impacts us profoundly.

But often my patients teach me more than I teach them – that spirituality should not be reserved only for endings and that the act of being well is much more than merely the absence of illness.

In this manuscript, Dr. Devanshi Choksi leads a mixed methods analysis of what is important for living and being well.

Stroke survivors and their care partners identify that outside of religious practices, that nature, service to others, and emotional balance were important in post-stroke recovery.

How can we as clinicians integrate these principles into our care? Exciting steps ahead.

We would like to thank our mentors, Drs. Merker and Balboni, and this work would not be possible without the collaboration and the contributions from our survivors and their care partners.”
