Melissa Hollo: Normal Hemoglobin Does Not Exclude Severe Iron Deficiency
Melissa Hollo, Director of Project Management at hc1 and Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A conversation yesterday left a lasting impression on me.
A woman was facing severe fatigue, yet her Hemoglobin level was 14, which is considered normal.
Many would have stopped there, but she didn’t.
She requested a check of her Ferritin levels.
The result: 3.
This indicated severely depleted iron stores, a condition that could have been completely overlooked if only hemoglobin was considered.
This is how Iron Deficiency Anemia can remain hidden, particularly during pregnancy.
Hemoglobin often serves as a late marker rather than an early warning sign.
We need to improve our approach:
- Look beyond ‘normal’ lab results
- Test iron stores early
- Intervene before risks escalate
Because what we don’t check, we can’t treat.
Learn how we’re supporting earlier maternal risk detection.”
