Faizan Khan: Key Findings on Long Term Stroke Risk After TIA and Minor Stroke
Faizan Khan, Medical Science Liaison (Cardiovascular) at Bristol Myers Squibb, CIHR Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Calgary, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:
“Reporting live from the American Heart Association EpiLifestyle26 meeting in Boston…thrilled to have presented the latest research from my Banting Canada postdoctoral fellowship, simultaneously published in Circulation!
In our PERSIST study published last year in JAMA, we showed that patients with Transient Ischemic Attack or Minor Stroke have a high long-term risk of subsequent stroke.
However, not all patients have an enduring stroke risk that necessitates ongoing risk reduction measures.
In the present analysis that included over 86,000 patients from 28 cohort studies, we provide a comprehensive and evidence-based understanding of the factors associated with long-term risk of stroke in this patient group.
A particularly novel aspect of our analysis is the estimation of population attributable fractions, which quantify the relative contribution of the identified factors to late recurrent strokes at a population level.
We hope our findings can help
- Identify patients with a particularly persistent stroke risk to help prioritize resources for long-term stroke prevention measures to those who would benefit most
- Facilitate the development and implementation of targeted stroke prevention strategies.”
