Caitlin Raymond: A Manifesto on Three Foundational Values for a Real Culture of Wellness
Caitlin Raymond, Assistant Professor of Pathology and Transfusion Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, shared a post on LinkedIn about her recent article published in Critical Values:
“My latest piece is live in Critical Values today — and this one felt important to write.
Nearly 85% of laboratory professionals have experienced burnout.
46% are experiencing it right now.
In a field where accuracy and vigilance are non-negotiable, that’s not just a workforce problem — it’s a patient safety problem.
But I didn’t want to write another article about resilience tips or self-care checklists.
I wanted to write something that spoke to how pathologists and laboratory professionals actually think and work.
So I wrote a manifesto — built around three values I believe are foundational to a real culture of wellness:
- Curiosity — the quiet barometer of a mind still engaged with its work
- Kairos — the moments of meaning that restore us in ways that productivity breaks never can
- Grace — the recognition that precision doesn’t require us to stop being human
Wellness isn’t an extracurricular.
It’s an operational necessity.
