Chad Mineo: Platelet-Rich Plasma as an Adjunct to Rehabilitation in Grade 2 Hamstring Injuries
Chad Mineo, Physician Extender and Research Coordinator at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Clevio Desouza et al, adding:
“Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) for Hamstrings:
High-quality ultrasound plus high-quality intervention equals better outcomes.
PRP hasn’t consistently beaten rehab for hamstring injuries—but context matters.
A 2025 RCT in European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology showed:
US-guided PRP plus rehab equals faster RTP (approximately 26 versus approximately 34 days) plus improved early healing
Compare that to the negative British Journal of Sports Medicine (2015) trial:
- No imaging guidance
- Questionable PRP prep
- Broad patient selection
Not all PRP, or studies, are created equal.
Approach for grade 2 hamstrings:
- Rehab is the foundation (objective RTP criteria)
- PRP equals adjunct with uncertain upside
- Only if done right (image guidance, true PRP, structured rehab)
- Expect modest gains (days, not reinjury prevention)
Bottom line: PRP isn’t a magic bullet—but in the right hands, it may provide an edge.”
