Thomas Rocco Jr: Adverse Cardiovascular Outcomes Associated with Metabolic Syndrome in Non-Obese Patients with Heart Failure
Thomas Rocco Jr, Clinical Professor Emeritus of Medicine at University of Rochester Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Daniel D Han et al, adding:
“The presence of metabolic abnormalities is a potent risk factor in heart failure, regardless of a patient’s weight; and this research article suggests clinicians should prioritize early metabolic screening and intervention for all cardiac patients, including those with a normal BMI.
A retrospective analysis, based on the MADIT-CRT database, revealed that even among non-obese patients, 57 percent met the criteria for Metabolic Syndrome (MS).
And non-obese patients with MS had a significantly higher 3-year cumulative probability of heart failure or death (34 percent) compared to those without MS (20 percent).
Further, within the non-obese MS group, those with Diabetes faced the highest risk, showing a 28 percent rate of adverse events within just 2.5 years.
Interestingly, ‘reverse cardiac remodeling’ was similar across all groups, suggesting that the increased risk in MS patients is driven by metabolic factors rather than a lack of response to device therapy (CRT/resynchronization therapy).
The lead author is a medical student at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.”
