Fadwa Said Abdelazim: Is Vaping Really ‘Safer’ for the Blood Than Smoking?

Fadwa Said Abdelazim, Consultant of Hematopathology and Specialist in Hematology at the University of Teaching and Education, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“A case 29 years old, male, no Diabetes or Hypertension, no thrombophilia risk factors congenital or acquired, only Vape for 2 years presented with PE …..

Is vaping really ‘safer’ for the blood than smoking?

  • Vaping with nicotine is associated with increased platelet activation and a more prothrombotic state.
  • Short‑term exposure to e‑cigarettes can increase clot formation, raise heart rate and blood pressure, and impair endothelial‑dependent vasodilation.
  • Animal and translational models (including JUUL‑type devices) show platelet hyperreactivity and shortened arterial occlusion times after brief exposure.
  • Case reports link vaping, combined with other risk factors (e.g. combined oral contraceptives), to venous and arterial thromboembolism in otherwise young adults.

For clinicians and the public: e‑cigarettes should not be considered harmless for the cardiovascular system, particularly in patients with existing thrombotic risk”
