Sonal Sonu: Blood Donation Myths in Rural Areas
Sonal Sonu, Senior Resident at AIIMS Bathinda, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“In many rural areas, people don’t refuse to donate blood because they don’t care.
They refuse because they’re afraid.
- ‘I’ll become weak.’
- ‘It will affect my future.’
- ‘It can cause disease.’
- ‘It’s against our customs.’
These are not just myths.
They are the reason patients keep waiting.
As someone in transfusion medicine, I’ve seen this gap closely – between people who need blood urgently and people who are too afraid to donate it.
And the truth is – awareness hasn’t reached where it is needed the most.
We don’t just have a blood shortage problem.
We have an awareness problem.
Maybe saving lives doesn’t always require advanced medicine – sometimes, it starts with correcting a belief.
Have you ever heard any of these myths?”
