Andrew Aswani: How NETs Contribute to Disease and Why They Matter
Andrew Aswani, Co-Founder, Chief Medical Officer at Santersus AG shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Michal Santocki and Elzbieta Kolaczkowska, published in Cells:
”The growing body of research on neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) continues to reshape our understanding of inflammation, immunity, and thrombosis.
This 2020 foundational MDPI review on immune‑complex-induced NETosis highlights that NETs are not just byproducts of inflammation-they are active drivers of vascular injury, coagulation, and organ dysfunction.
When NETs accumulate unchecked, they create a cascade of endothelial damage, platelet activation, and immune dysregulation that underpins some of the most severe conditions we face-sepsis, autoimmune disease, cancer, and cardiovascular complications.
At Santersus AG, we’re working to help clinicians intervene at this root cause. Our NucleoCapture platform is designed to selectively remove NETs from circulation, offering a targeted, extracorporeal approach that avoids the systemic side effects of many pharmacologic therapies. As the scientific community continues to validate the central role of NETs in immune‑driven thrombosis, the need for NET‑focused interventions becomes even more urgent.
This research strengthens the case for a new therapeutic paradigm-one that doesn’t just modulate inflammation, but directly removes the molecular drivers of immune‑mediated injury.”
